Island Procida
Island Procida Capital of Culture 2022
The island of Procida in the Gulf of Naples
Procida is the smallest island in the Gulf of Naples. Its authentic colours and shades can be seen even from a distance. Procida just like Ischia is of volcanic origins with an area of 3.7 km² and smallest island in the Gulf of Naples.
The island has three harbors, Marina di Procida, Marina di Corricella and the tourist port of Procida, where you can dock with both regular and private boats.
How to reach the Island Procida
The island of Procida can be reached by car ferry and hydrofoil from the ports of Naples, Pozzuoli and the island of Ischia. The fishing island is better known among the inhabitants of the Campania region in the summer period, who stay in hotels as well as in privately rented apartments and houses. Due to its size, Procida remains an island with an idyllic atmosphere, despite the influx of tourists during the daytime hours from late afternoon onwards. Here you have the feeling of returning to the past with the harmony of the small alleys and the traditional cuisine.
The islanders of the island of Procida, with their mild and sociable character, still tend to tourism today, as it was once understood on the nearby islands, with a look back at the traditions and hospitality. Experience its beauties for yourself during a visit: fishermen, farmers, blue sea and boats, lemons, hills, small villages that have stood still in time. The island is characterized by numerous views of the picturesque bays and the rocks of the Terra Murata fortress with the Palazzo D’Avalos and the church of S. Michele.
Procida is for those who love real contact with nature and feed on pure sea air and real food. But that’s not all: the small streets of this island allow travelers to revive all the traditions of its inhabitants.
PROCIDA – ITALY’S CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2022
Many fell in love with Procida. Starting with the cinema, which the island has chosen as the location for some successful films. The scenes from ‘Il Postino’ with the actors Philippe Noiret (who played Neruda) and Massimo Troisi are unforgettable. The most hidden fishing port Corricella is still a destination for many tourists who can also enjoy dishes in the ‘Locanda del Postino’. The love story between Mario Ruopolo (Massimo Troisi) and Beatrice (Maria Grazia Cucinotta) was born here, surrounded by picturesque fishermen’s boats and the sea air. Inside the restaurant there are still some memorabilia from the film, such as the bicycle used by Massimo Troisi. The Postino Beach in Pozzo Vecchio is also worth a visit.
Arturo, protagonist of Elsa Morante’s book ‘The Isle of Arturo’, was also created on Procida. Winner of the Strega Prize. The island is also the protagonist of another book written by the writer Alphonse de Lamartine in 1849. The chosen title “Graziella” is the same that is given every summer to a young Procidan between 14 and 21 years old who has the task of wearing an old costume embroidered with gold.
Procida – The famous Good Friday procession I Misteri
The procession of the secrets of Good Friday is certainly one of the most famous and evocative of the Gulf of Naples. The “Misteri” represent scenes from the Bible with carts made by young Procidani and carried on the streets. In recent years there have also been modern scripts dealing with the terror of drugs and the Camorra. A culture that is carried from generation to generation and takes part in the procession of almost a third of the population of Procida. A custom that first appeared in 1627 and was introduced by the Turchini brotherhood.
The participants watch over Christ in the night from Thursday evening to Friday morning, where the “Misteri” (translated mysteries) are kept secret until they are brought to Terra Murata in the morning. The procession has always followed the same route for centuries: first the flags representing the various brotherhoods and the trumpet march, then the carts of the “Misteri”, the girls with flowers, the children dressed in black, followed by the “little angels” accompanied by their fathers with the statue of the Madonna in mourning and finally at the end of the procession the “Cross of Christ” follows. The statue of the dead Christ, a work by Carmine Lantricene (1728), impressively ends the procession, which lasts around 3 hours and starts at 7 a.m. in the morning.
I Misteri is a procession that can be easily reached from Ischia and is only about a quarter of an hour away by ferry from Procida. A large part of the Ischitan population takes part in this impressive Good Friday procession every year.

Procida and Beaches – The most beautiful beaches and bays on the island
The island has several bays and beaches. Among the Pozzo Vecchio beach on the west side of the island is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. This is also where one of the most intense scenes of the famous 1994 film was filmed. Mario (Massimo Troisi) and the beautiful Beatrice (Mariagrazia Cucinotta) meet and fall in love for the first time.
Beach Chiaiolella
The beaches of Ciraccio and Ciracciello (Chiaiolella) were created after the landslide of the rocky ridge. Here the sun is present all day long, while the mistral blows frequently in the afternoon. This is the longest stretch of sand on the entire island of Procida with also free beach areas. Ciraccio beach is more secluded than Chiaiolellla and therefore more peaceful. The port can be reached from here with a rental boat directly from the mainland as well from the nearby islands of Ischia and Capri to spend a combined day between ocean and true Mediterranean cuisine.
La Lingua
The small panoramic pebbles beach of La Lingua is one of the most beautiful beaches of Procida. It is located behind the ferries at the left end of the port of Marina Grande. The beach of Corricella spreads out on the threshold of the crater of an extinct volcano, its specialities are the beauty of a crystal clear sea and tranquility. The Cliffs of Carbonchio are ideal for adventure seekers and snorkelers. With a little luck here you can enjoy freshly caught fish. Be amazed by the beauty and diversity of marine fauna.
La Silurenza
