Abruzzo Region between Marche – Molise – Lazio
This region borders the Marche region to the north, the Lazio region to the west, the Molise region to the south and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The Adriatic coast takes up a third of the total area of the region. The remaining two thirds are dominated by the mountain landscapes of the Apennines, with its Gran Sasso d’Italia massif, the highest south of the Alps at almost 3000 meters. Further to the south, you will find Majella National Park and to the west Sirente-Velino Regional Park. Each of these areas have their own character.
The Gran Sasso National Park with its Gran Sasso Massif – the great rock of Italy – consisting of a wild landscape is characterized by jagged peaks, ridges and vertically sloping walls. A very suitable area for nature lovers, let it be for hiking as well as for recreational holidays. The Majella National Park with 86,000 hectares and its Maiella massif reach a height of 2795 m with the Monte Amaro.
Flora and fauna
Slopes with a multitude of forests and water sources are particularly attractive. The popular area is an absolute paradise for mountain botanists from all over the world due to its more than 1,800 different plants. Especially in spring, you can admire the corresponding blossoms. The Apennine wolf (Canis lupus italicus), the brown bear (Ursus arctus marsicanus), the golden eagle, chamois and the peregrine falcon have become more and more common in the recent years.
Due to its location, this area is the coldest in the region and therefore, the peaks are often covered with snow until late spring. An ideal area for a skiing holiday combined with excursion possibilities through the many small villages and towns with towers and castles. Those who are interested in culture have a large selection to chose from: temples and discoveries from the pre-Roman times, Roman archaeological sites, medieval churches and spectacularly situated hermitages, castles and frescoes from the Renaissance period, important archeology and art collections in the capitals. Many crafts are practiced throughout the region, from ceramics by Castelli and woodworking by Pretoro over liqueur production by Casàuria to goldsmithing by Scanno.
The Abruzzo region: a fascinating area
The Abruzzo region is a fascinating area of lively contrasts, with an intense mix of old and new. Tradition and modernity are equally cultivated here. But tradition plays a major role in the life of the Abbruzzo people, which is celebrated with songs during the many different festivals. These traditions from the time of field and farm work were adopted by well-organized and polyphonic choirs and folkloric groups.
The rich landscape of Abruzzo
The rich landscape of Abruzzo opens up unlimited opportunities for sporting activities. In just a few hours’ drive from the mountains, you can reach the beautiful, gentle Adriatic beach. The flat sandy coasts in the north merge into wild, steep rocky coasts in the south. Hiking, horseback riding, climbing and mountain biking, ski hiking, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing as well as swimming, diving, sailing and paragliding are just a few of the diverse offerings for an active holiday.
And for the gourmets, the Abruzzo culinary art remains an incomparable experience with a multitude of authentic dishes. Great emphasis is placed on self-cultivation with organic products. The Italian food culture occupies a large place with handmade pasta, excellent meat, cheese, salami, fish dishes, fresh vegetables, delicious sweets made according to old recipes, at prices at which eating in the restaurant is fun again.
