The Aosta Valley region – Smallest region between mountain and rivers
The Aosta Valley is the smallest region in Italy and lies on the border between France and Switzerland. Here there are majestic peaks, including the highest peaks in the Alps such as the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Gran Paradiso and His Majesty the Monte Bianco, with its 4810 m. There is no competition in Europe. The roof of the old continent, the jewel of the region is Courmayeur, considered one of the most important ski resorts in the world and the cradle of the first mountain guide school.
In connection with its high mountains and impressive valleys, the first Italien National Park is located here, which was founded in 1922: the Gran Paradiso, where you can observe animals in their natural environment: chamois, golden eagles, marmots and of course ibexes are symbols of the park.
Historically, the Aosta Valley is considered a land of contact and fusion between Italy and France, a characteristic that is reflected in the official bilingualism and the status of the autonomous region. The large, modern tunnels of the Great St. Bernard and especially on the Monte Bianco, an engineering masterpiece that ends in France, increased its characteristic crossing between Italy and the rest of Europe.
Ski on the Aosta Valley
When you think of the Aosta Valley, the thought immediately leads to the ski slopes of Cervinia, Courmayeur, Pila, an excellent destination for lovers of winter sports, from skiing to snowboarding and ice skating.
The symbolic entrance door for those coming from the south is the town of Pont Saint Martin, from which the road that leads into the beautiful Gressoney Valley begins.
Through the valley that leads from Pont Saint Martin to Courmayeur, there are 82 buildings, including ancient fortifications, military fortresses, residential complexes and watchtowers. All of this testifies the rich history of the region. Almost like guardians of the valley who offer visitors the opportunity to experience a journey with a lot of charm. The most famous mansion of the Aosta Valley is the Castle of Fénis. Famous for its spectacular architecture, as the representative residence of the Challant family. Definitely worth a visit are the Castle of Issogne, Sarriod de la Tour, Sarre, Saint-Pierre, Ussel. The path through the castles leads to Aosta, a mix of Roman and medieval history, in addition to the ancient traditions.
