The Apulia region
The Apulia region, also known as “Le Puglie”, stretches along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas and is known as the flattest region in Italy. The only mountain range “Monti della Daunia” with the Monte Cornacchio (1,152 m altitude) forms the border to the Campania region. The Salento peninsula in the south of Apulia forms the so-called “heel” of the “Italian boot” and with its strip of land in the sea, offers a large selection of magical coastal landscapes for every taste: from the sandy beaches of Torre dell’Orso and Porto Cesario, to the rocky coast of Otranto and from Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Ionian and Adriatic Seas meet, to the “Pearl of Salento” with the port city of Gallipoli and Gargano, the spur of the Italian boot with the magnificent Tremiti Islands in front of it.
Culture and tradition of Pulia
Experience the musical culture and tradition at the numerous celebrations and cultural events in the various villages with traditional music. Large festivals and live concerts, international film festivals and art exhibitions. Puglia is the region of Italy with the most events during the carnival season: from Massafra to Gallipoli, from Dauno to Manfredonia and in Poggio Imperiale, the carnival days are an endless procession and carnival dance of colorful masked costumes. Completely different from what you are used to at home! A special attraction is certainly the most famous one of the parades: the Putignano Carnival, one of the oldest in Italy and also one of the longest in the world. Putignano is a small medieval village near Bari that rises in the Murgia, between the trulli and the karst caves.
Apulia and the nature
The enchanting region of Apulia with its unique nature is an ideal vacation spot for nature lovers. Whether the national parks of the Murge and the Gargano, the Foresta Umbra or the salt pans and lakes. A visit to the nature reserve Torre Guaceto, the deep fissures of Laterza and the wide sinkholes of Altamura, which characterize the landscape of the entire region with their particularly impressive natural spectacles, is highly recommended.
For those interested in history and culture, Puglia offers a multitude of historical sites that are important ancient cultural sites: from prehistory to the Magna Graecia and the Roman Empire to the Renaissance and the pomp of the Baroque, particularly visible in the architecture of the city of Lecce and of Salento.
The trulli town Alberobello
The around 5,000 trulli in the Itria Valley, for example, are an impressive testimony to antiquity. 1,000 of them are in the trulli capital Alberobello, which has been under UNESCO protection since 1996. On a wooded hill outside the city of Andria, approx. 50 km north of Bari, Castel del Monte offers an awe-inspiring sight that you are always going to remember. Friedrich’s passion for astronomy and geometry is evident there.
