Friuli Venezia Giulia region
The region lies on the border with Slovenia and Austria, overlooking the Adriatic Sea and surrounded by high mountains. The high plateau of the Karst (it. Carso), formed by bare rocks, where soil erosion has created a series of grottos, caves and “spring pots”, is impressive. The view from the high mountains of the eastern Dolomites, Carnic (it. Carnia ) and Julian Alps (it. Alpi Giulie), between lakes, valleys and nature reserves are also breathtaking. From the border with Veneto in Monfalcone, the coast is lined with lagoons and has long sandy beaches where there are various tourist areas, including the famous town of Lignano Sabbiadoro. From Monfalcone to Trieste, the coast is rocky.
Friuli Venezia Giulia – Great variety of landscapes
The great variety of landscapes corresponds to a cultural heritage, so rich and diverse, with a complex history and due to the confluence, in this country, of the different population groups. For this reason, Friuli-Venezia Giulia presents itself as a small universe that combines many different traditions: it is the “land of contrasts”.
One of the attractions of the region is the ancient city of Aquileia, one of the most important centers of the Roman Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Dolomites, which offers some very attractive landscapes and colors in every season. Crystalline ponds, snow-capped peaks and green valleys. Between the Karst plateau and the sea, Trieste is a city that is definitely to be discovered: the historic cafes, neoclassical buildings of the Grand Canal and many other monuments reveal the charm of this Central European city and its glorious past.
Another unmissable destination of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region is Gorizia, with its cosmopolitan character, with its medieval castle that tells a centuries-old story. Udine is also very fascinating, dominated by the beautiful castle and decorated by the works of Giambattista Tiepolo. Pordenone is also worth a visit with its old buildings and the distinctive promenade with long verandas.
