Cradle of western civilization and Christian culture, legends and history, old roads and green hills. This is the Lazio region. The region borders the Tyrrhenian Sea and is characterized by a predominantly hilly and mountainous area, but flat near the coast. The region offers landscapes, contrasts and supplements, intact nature and spectacular perspectives on the urban centers. Visitors can immerse themselves in the oases of extraordinary beauty within the city walls. One example is the Villa Borghese in Rome, the capital of Italy, the most famous city park. Here you can walk or ride a bike. The villa is very interesting also for the opportunity to visit Villa Borghese and its masterpieces.
The Thermal Region Lazio
Latium is a thermal region, the history of which can be traced back to the many medicinal water springs. They show an enormous development in Roman times, be it in the republican as well as in the imperial. The Romans built splendid thermal baths, of which spectacular testimonies can be found scattered throughout the area. The Baths of Caracalla you will find in the heart of Rome.
Tivoli is another thermal resort, but its name is mainly associated with the artistic beauties that can be found there. Its fame is due to the monumental villas. Villa D’Este, characterized by beautiful fountains, gardens and the magnificent palace from the Renaissance period. Villa Adriana is the ancient residence of Emperor Adriano. Both villas have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Discovering the Lazio
For those who prefer the sea, the region offers some marvellous attractions such as Gaeta, Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo, Sperlonga. The Pontine Islands, Ponza, Ventotene and Palmarola are also worth visiting. Sea lovers cannot miss the chance of visiting Bracciano, where dreamlike water surfaces are surrounded by the intense green of the surrounding nature. Here you can visit the imposing Odescalchi Castle in the middle.
The medieval streets of the villages on the lake shores, give you the feeling that these places are not only tied to the Roman Empire, but also to different epochs and cultures.
One example is Lake Bolsena in Viterbo, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. From here the two islands Bisentina and Martana merge with each other. The charm of the nature that surrounds them and the beautiful landscapes combine the history of different epochs. You will find traces of the Etruscans and Romans and the historical period that followed.
The Lazio offers to Mountain lovers excellent ski areas such as Terminillo, Livata and Campo Staffi.

Amazing Rome and its beauty
In the heart of Rome, the majestic Colosseum can be found, home of the circus games, where the gladiators fought. Via dei Fori Imperiali, which starts from the Colosseum, runs along the archaeological route. A unique complex of temples, basilicas, public and religious buildings in the green of the vegetation, the heart of which is the Roman Forum.
The priceless archaeological finds and works found during excavations are largely kept in the Capitoline Museums on the Campidoglio, also known as ancient city of Acropolis. Nearby is the Theater of Marcellus and the famous marble sculpture Mouth of Truth which are all near the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, which represents the face of a Faun. Its mouth, according to legend, swallowed the hands of liars. The Capital Rome continues along the Tiber to Castel Sant’Angelo, the mausoleum of Emperor Adriano, refuge for the popes, also used as a prison. The obligatory stop is the Vatican City, seat of the Papal States, with the famous St. Peter’s Square and the splendor of the Sistine Chapel. Here you can admire the “Last Judgment”, Michelangelo’s masterpiece of the century.
The historical part of Rome
Rome is home to the most important institutions of the country, buildings, churches and squares. The Piazza di Spagna with its famous staircase, Piazza Farnese and Piazza Navona with the fountain of the four rivers of the Bernini. Not to mention the Trevi Fountain from the eighteenth century, where by tradition tourists toss a coin as a wish to return to the Eternal City at some point.
Excursions outside of the city of Rome
Close to Rome, the Castelli Romani is an attraction for anyone who wants to enjoy a picnic with ease and a cool retreat during those hot summer nights. Ostia, the famous seaside resort on the Lazio coast is well worth a visit for its excavations of Ostia Antica. This is one of the best examples of the ancient Roman cities that have come here.
About 40 kilometers from Rome is Tivoli, with its two beautiful villas. Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este, with its UNESCO World Heritage Site, are definitely worth a visit.
But the other provinces of the Lazio region are also filled with pleasant surprises. The city centers have been important since ancient times. Rieti is rich in both Roman and Middle Ages presences, the city became a free city and later the residence of the popes.
Latina and the province offer beautiful beaches, with a view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, but also picturesque villages and the nature of the Circeo National Park. Green and charming medieval villages characterize the Tuscia and its main town. An oasis with good food and relax, it also includes the Etruscan heritage and the Via Francigena. Little known, despite the many beauties of the area is the Ciociaria and its main town. It offers the visitor beautiful landscapes, picturesque villages in the middle of greenery and historical evidence.
