The Marche region
This region borders in the north Emilia-Romagna and the Republic of San Marino. In the south on Abruzzo and in the west on the regions of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio. The region is geographically divided into levels, namely the Adriatic coast with the three cities Ancona, Pesaro and Fano. In the west the hilly landscape with the cities Urbino and Ascoli Piceno and finally in the north the Umbrian Apennines . Abruzzo Apennines in the south form the border with Umbria. The Marche has a rough landscape with hills and mountains. The mountains offer an incomparable experience with their untouched nature, wild gorges, sensational grottos, wooded slopes and snow-covered peaks.
The nature reserves of Marche
The total of 12 nature reserves in the Marche occupy over 90,000 hectares of the total area. These are exclusively mountain areas: two national parks (Monti Sibillini and Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga), four regional parks (Monte Conero, Sasso Simone and Simoncello , Monte San Bartolo and Gola della Rossa and Frasassi), six nature reserves (Abbadia di Fiastra, Montagna di Torricchio, Ripa Bianca, Sentina, Gola del Furlo and Monte San Vicino and Monte Canfaito). All this with over 100 plant protection areas.
The fauna today is home to wolves, deer, roe deer and porcupines. Especially the chamois buck from the Apennines, which was reintroduced in 2008, and which now lives in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains. Special bird species such as the golden eagle, the Lanner falcon, the peregrine falcon, the Alpine crow and the eagle owl are not uncommon here.
The many museums and visitor centers of the nature reserves such as Abbadia di Fiastra, Amandola, Apecchio, Ascoli, Fermo, Genga, Ostra, Piobbico, Serra San Quirico, Pioraco, Smerillo, the Geosciences Museum in Piandimeleto, the Museum of Avifauna in Sarnano and Montefortino are also appreciated by discerning scientists.
The Marche – Hiking and Sport activities
The Marche is an ideal travel destination for hikers thanks to the marked trails with beautiful hiking trails through the woods, but also riding trails, canoe trails and mountain bike trails. Especially for cyclists, this area offers a variety of opportunities to explore the natural wonders and traditional specialties. A ski holiday is also an option with a total of 9 winter sports centers. Here you can find many slopes and trails for skiers, cross-country skiers and snowboarders.
Beach of Marche
The Marche offers 180 kilometers of Adriatic coast and 26 seaside resorts with beautiful beaches and picturesque bays. One of the most popular summer vacation area of the northern Adriatic is the bay of Portonovo with its beautiful, white pebble beaches, are also a destination for divers.
The Marche – wine and tradition
The Marche are also a good wine region with a production of selected wines, which are hardly known abroad. Big part of the wine production is a well-kept secret. The red wines Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno are particularly recommended.
You can discover the traditional and historical side of the region at the impressive fair in honor of the patron saint Judas Cyriacus. This takes place in the first days of May in Ancona and lasts for a total of four days. The city is adorned with stalls and regional specialties, craft stalls and sales exhibitions, street artists and painters who present their works in the open air. For music lovers there is the Ancona Jazz Festival with international participants.
