The region of Sicily
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and therefore also Italy. Located southwest of the tip of Italy, it is the remains of a land bridge that once connected Europe and Africa.
It is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina and is bordered by the Ionian, Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean seas. The region includes the island itself and some of these smaller islands and archipelagos offshore.
The island of Sicily offers varied landscapes with a 1,484 km long coastline with unique beaches and bays. These include the small offshore Aeolian, Aegadian and Pelagic Islands as well as Pantelleria and Ustica.
These are characterized by the beauty of their landscape and their special nature, tradition, art and history. The incredible clear colors of the sea and the wonderful seabed make it one of the most beautiful islands on earth. The popular and exclusive seaside resort of Taormina is particularly attractive with a breathtaking coastal landscape and a view of the most beautiful bay – the Bay of Naxos with the famous Giardini Naxos and the volcano as a backdrop. In this region, the Mediterranean offers breathtaking landscapes, intense smells and culinary experiences that only unspoiled nature can give.
History of Sicily
History also comes to life here with its incomparable past. For travelers interested in culture and history, Sicily is an absolute wonder with its ancient culture and numerous archaeological finds such as Agrigento with the Valley of the Temples, Selinunte, Segesta or Siracusa with its Greek theater or the ancient Roman theater in Taormina with the unique view of the Etna volcano.
In the lively capital of Palermo there are unique palaces and churches from Arab and Norman times. The pulsating city of Catania in the shadow of Mount Etna spreads all the way to the coast of the Ionian Sea and attracts with its splendid palaces and churches in the baroque style. The fish market is a special experience for every visitor. The enchanting baroque cities of Noto, Enna, Modica, Syracuse or Ragusa fascinate with their decorative sandstone and lava stone buildings, the palaces, churches, picturesque alleys and the wonderful facades.
For an active and hiking holiday, the still active and impressive volcanic areas Etna and Stromboli offer hikers and mountain bikers a special challenge. The national parks of Madonie and dello Zingaro are absolute natural oases and guarantee the desired recreational value.
In 1787 when he visited the island, Goethe stated that “Italy without Sicily makes no picture in the soul: this is the key to everything”
